THE HARMONIC MINOR SCALE:
This scale is a form of Minor which contains a raised seventh degree. The raised seventh offers a leading tone for strong resolution toward the scales tonic. This makes resolutions occur with far greater pull than is possible with the Natural Minor scale.
Sometimes called the heavy metal scales, and made popular in rock by guitarists lick Richie Blackmore, Yngwie Malmsteen and other greats players A great way to spice up your solos if your getting bored of the sound of blues scales and pentatonics. Also very useful in Jazz especially playing ober 251 progressions.

The video explains the scales’ basic structure and design. Viewers are shown 7 fingerboard patterns off of sixth and seventh strings. Then, there is a thorough explanation of the harmony and how chords can be used in progressions to utilize the sound of Harmonic Minor.

I have formatted all of the harmonic minor scales as 3-notes per string scale forms so you can more thoroughly learn learn the harmonic minor scale all over the neck. This particular lesson concentrates on the all 7 of it’s scale forms.

In heavy metal guitar playing, the harmonic minor scale is commonly used because it is one of the darker-sounding scales. Learn about the fifth mode of the harmonic minor scale with help from a guitarist and studio musician in this free video on metal electric guitar lessons.

This is a new version of my “Evolution of Rock Guitar” video series, which is also a demo of my new Fractal Audio Systems Axe-Fx Ultra Pre-amp/Effects processor. This time I used the Axe-Fx Ultra exclusively for all guitar sounds and effects and recorded it direct in Cubase, no extra “tricks” done in the mix or anything, it’s all coming from the Axe-Fx (except the backing tracks of course..) But I’m using many different guitars as shown and mentioned in the video. I’ve also mentioned some of the amp types and effects from the Axe-Fx that I’m using on the different tracks, if anybody should need more specific details, please contact me (the Axe-Fx has thousands of parameters to adjust..).
