Make sure you learn the major scale. Learn and practice it in all 12 keys. I think that any good guitarist understands the major scale. Learn the scale all the way up and down the neck, learn all the chords that go with the major scale. Learn how to play all the chords. Everything from major 7 chords, minor7, minor9, dominant7, dominant13. Learn how to play them anywhere on the neck. It seems like a lot but you will be amazed how quick you learn when you apply yourself. Get a good teacher that can teach you the theory and how to apply it. Once you learn all this than you will be a real good guitarist, regardless of the style you like or want to play.

i wouldn’t say im really good at guitar, but i’d say im still kinda good. my brother thinks hes a big badass at guitar, but he isn’t really. all he plays is Alice in Chains and other grunge stuff. and hes only good at their solos and NOTHING else. im better than him in all other aspects of guitar. i want to become better than him at soloing, and i want to know if learning all the scales and things is really important. i already have good excersizes that i do to gain speed, but i want to know if i need to learn scales to get really good. im also trying to learn to sweep pick, and ive read u need to know scales to do that. any one know?

Learning scales will help you when you want to improvise solos as you’ll know the notes of the key

I’m going to the Dominican Republic next year 2 take Bachata lessons and I need to know what is the name of the guitar the Bachata singers play because in the band there’s at least three other guitar players but I want to know what the lead guitar is called. Para mi gente Dominicano que saben que lo que. Gracias!

The main guitar is the acoustic but in the modern bachata like Aventura there is also a base.

pentatonic?

I know the key signatures for all the scales, just wondering if I will be holding myself back from not learning the major and minor first. Ugh what is my problem I might as well just start learning them now, I’m just being lazy.

The pentatonic scales are just certain notes in the major and minor scales.

The major pentatonic is the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th notes of the major scale.

The minor pentatonic is the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th notes of the minor scale.

When playing blues, it is fairly common to mix both minor and major pentatonic into the same piece, since the scales offer different colors and feelings and often sound great when put together.

If you are just now starting blues guitar, I would actually recommend learning the pentatonics and a variety of blues licks and patterns.

When you start adding in chromatic notes (those outside of the key of the piece) and even when you use non-pentatonic notes, your playing starts to sound more like jazz. So if your ultimate goal is to become a jazz guitarist (no small feat!) then you ought to learn the major and minor scales first, but if you really just want to play the blues the pentatonics should be fine.
